Élam, Yohanan et Éliohénaï. Les portiers sont des fonctionnaires du temple, chargés plus particulièrement de la surveillance. Peut être n'ont-ils été assimilés aux lévites que tardivement. En faisant remonter à David l'organisation du groupe des portiers, ce texte établit leur légitimité. Obed-Édom est certainement l'homme qui a gardé le coffre de l'alliance de Dieu pendant trois mois dans sa maison et qui, de ce fait, a été béni (13.13-14). Les v. 12-19 donnent la répartition des portiers selon les quatre côtés du temple; mais comme il n'y a que trois familles (Mechélémia, Obed-Édom, Hossa), celle de Mechélémia est répartie sur deux des côtés. D'après les v. 17 et 18, le nombre total des postes à pourvoir est de vingt-quatre, nombre correspondant aux classes des prêtres et des chanteurs.
