« Tu as certainement une idée à ce sujet, répondit Natan. Réalise-la, car Dieu est avec toi. » David, qui habite un palais, veut faire une maison pour Dieu. Cette initiative royale ne correspond pas au projet de Dieu. Dans les v. 4-10, le texte hébreu joue sur les différents sens du mot traduit par « maison » (bâtiment ou descendance). La prophétie de Natan opère un recentrage: Dieu seul est le maître qui règne comme il l'entend et choisit qui il veut. La descendance royale est assurée à la maison de David. Pour autant, le roi ne devient pas un dieu sur la terre; encore moins après sa mort.
