Matthew 27:64
What Does This Mean?
The religious leaders are speaking to Pilate, asking him to secure the tomb of Jesus until the third day. They fear that if his disciples come and steal the body, they might claim Jesus rose from the dead, which would cause even more confusion among people.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a special toy, and your friends think it can do magic tricks. Some grown-ups are worried that your other friends might take the toy at night to pretend it did a trick, so they want to lock it up tight for a few days to stop any funny business.
Historical Background
Matthew wrote this gospel in the late first century AD, likely targeting Jewish Christians. The setting is Jerusalem during Passover, where tensions between Jewish leaders and followers of Jesus were high due to the claims made about him being the Messiah.
Living It Out Today
In today's context, consider a situation where rumors could cause panic or confusion. It’s important not to spread unverified information that might lead people astray, much like how securing the tomb was intended to prevent false claims from spreading.
