Explained for Children
Imagine you're playing a game where your friend is hiding while you watch for others. Your friend comes back to find you napping instead! That's like Jesus finding his friends sleeping when he wanted them awake and praying with him.
Historical Background
Mark wrote this Gospel around AD 65-70, about 30 years after the events of Jesus' life. He was writing for a predominantly Gentile audience in Rome, possibly to help them understand the life of Jesus from Peter's perspective.
Living It Out Today
Think of a time when you were supposed to be focused on something important but got distracted or tired instead. This verse reminds us how easy it is to lose focus and how we should strive to stay alert and engaged in our faith commitments.
