Ezekiel 36:22
Amharic Catholic Version (መጽሐፍ ቅዱስ - (ካቶሊካዊ እትም - ኤማሁስ)) No Year
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, God is speaking to the Israelites through Ezekiel. God says that He is not acting because the Israelites deserve it, but because of His own holy name which the Israelites have dishonored among other nations.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a really special toy that everyone admires, but your friends see you misusing it and think it's not so special anymore. Now, imagine your parents clean up the toy because they love it, not because you were nice to it. That's like what God is saying here. He is acting not because the Israelites were good, but because He loves His name and wants to restore its honor.
Historical Background
Ezekiel, a prophet, wrote this verse around 593-571 BCE. He was speaking to the Israelites, who had been exiled to Babylon because of their disobedience. The cultural setting was one of national disgrace and spiritual desolation, as the Israelites had abandoned their faith and worshiped other gods.
Living It Out Today
Today, this verse can remind us that God's actions are motivated by His own character and not necessarily by our behavior. For instance, a parent might forgive and help their child not because the child has been good, but because the parent's love and values require them to act.
