Exodus 16:29
Amharic Catholic Version (መጽሐፍ ቅዱስ - (ካቶሊካዊ እትም - ኤማሁስ)) No Year
What Does This Mean?
This verse from Exodus tells the Israelites that God has given them the Sabbath day as a rest day. He provided them with extra bread on the sixth day so they wouldn't need to collect it on the seventh day, the Sabbath. Moses is telling the people to stay in their places on the Sabbath and not go out to gather manna.
Explained for Children
Imagine if your parents gave you an extra snack on Friday so you wouldn't need to ask for one on Saturday. That's kind of what God did for the Israelites. He wanted them to rest and not go out to gather food on their special rest day, the Sabbath.
Historical Background
Moses wrote this part of Exodus during the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after they left Egypt. The Israelites were learning to trust God's provisions and to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest. This happened around 1440 BC.
Living It Out Today
In a modern context, this verse can encourage us to set aside one day a week to rest and focus on God. For instance, setting aside Sunday to attend church, read the Bible, and spend time in prayer can be a way to honor the Sabbath principle.
