John 12:36
Afrikaans Bible (ABA) 2007 (Bybel vir almal)
What Does This Mean?
In this verse from John's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to his listeners and encourages them to believe in the light while they can see it clearly. He emphasizes that by believing in the light, people become children of light. After saying this, Jesus leaves and hides himself from them.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek at night with a flashlight. When you have your flashlight on, you can see where to go and not bump into things. Jesus is like that flashlight, showing us the way to be good. He says, 'Use my light while you can so you don't get lost in the dark.' Then, he hides because it's his turn to find someone!
Historical Background
The Gospel of John was written by the Apostle John around 90-100 AD for a diverse Christian community. The cultural setting is post-crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, where there was growing tension between Jewish religious authorities and early Christians.
Living It Out Today
Consider when you're faced with a moral decision or temptation to do something wrong. This verse reminds us to stick to what's right (the light) even if others aren't doing it. It’s like choosing to tell the truth even when it seems easier not to, because following Jesus means being honest and upright.
