Par le baptême, donc, nous avons été mis au tombeau avec lui pour être associés à sa mort, afin que, tout comme le Christ a été ramené d'entre les morts par la puissance glorieuse du Père, nous aussi nous vivions d'une vie nouvelle. Aux chap. 6 et 7, Paul répond à d'éventuelles objections. Il vient d'annoncer que « là où le péché s'est multiplié, la grâce de Dieu a été bien plus abondante encore » (5.20). On pourrait en déduire qu'on a intérêt « à vivre dans le péché pour que la grâce de Dieu soit plus abondante » (v. 1). Faire le mal pour aboutir au bien, c'est absurde, répond Paul. Le péché est une puissance qui nous éloigne du Christ; unis à la mort du Christ, le chrétien meurt au péché et se trouve ainsi libéré de cette puissance. C'est ce que représente le rite du baptême, toujours pratiqué par immersion dans l'Antiquité. Le baptisé disparaît un moment sous la surface de l'eau: c'est une sorte de mort. Il resurgit ensuite à l'air libre comme s'il naissait à une vie nouvelle. Il a échappé définitivement au péché et à la loi qui en renforçait le pouvoir.
