Non, répond encore Paul, car le risque de retomber dans l'esclavage du péché existe toujours. Le chrétien est serviteur de Jésus-Christ (1.1), non pas du péché. Par sa mort, le Christ a racheté notre liberté, comme un bon maître. En effet, dans l'Antiquité on pouvait racheter un esclave pour l'arracher au pouvoir d'un mauvais maître et ensuite l'affranchir (1 Cor 6.20).
