Cependant ces hommes ne voulurent rien entendre. Alors le lévite leur amena sa femme dehors. Ils la violèrent, en abusèrent toute la nuit et ne la laissèrent qu'à l'aube. Dieu semble ici totalement absent et silencieux. On pourra comparer ce récit avec un épisode assez semblable où, à Sodome, cette même violence tente de s'exercer à l'égard des étrangers (Gen 19). Mais là, Dieu est intervenu pour empêcher le drame. La question posée par l'apparente impassibilité de Dieu face à une telle violence (chap. 11, la fille de Jefté) reste provisoirement sans réponse.
