C'est pourquoi voici ce que déclare le Seigneur Dieu: « Je vais laisser déborder mon ardente indignation sur cette ville, sur les hommes et sur les bêtes, sur les arbres de la campagne et les produits du sol. Elle sera comme un feu qui ne s'éteint pas. » La loi exigeait que les sacrifices complets soient offerts à Dieu et brûlés sur l'autel. Mais quand l'infidélité, l'injustice et le mensonge prédominent, les offrandes perdent toute valeur aux yeux du Seigneur. Puisque le peuple se bouche les oreilles pour ne pas entendre l'appel des prophètes, Dieu, à son tour, n'écoutera plus ses prières et ne portera plus attention à ses sacrifices. Mieux vaut donc manger les bêtes sacrifiées que les gaspiller sur l'autel du Seigneur!
