John 8:57
Arabic SVD 1865 Version (Smith and Van Dyke)
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, some Jewish people are talking to Jesus and pointing out that he is not old enough to have seen Abraham, who lived thousands of years earlier. They think Jesus is making a claim about seeing someone from long ago.
Explained for Children
Imagine if your friend said they saw dinosaurs walking around yesterday! You might say, 'But you weren't even born when dinosaurs were alive!' That's kind of what the Jewish people are saying to Jesus here, but about Abraham instead of dinosaurs.
Historical Background
This verse is from the Gospel of John, written by John, one of Jesus' disciples. It was likely written around AD 90 for a mixed audience of Jews and Gentiles who were interested in understanding more about Jesus. At this time, Jewish people would have had strong beliefs rooted in their history and Scriptures.
Living It Out Today
Today, we might apply this verse by considering how we respond when others question our spiritual claims or experiences. We can remain confident in our faith, just as Jesus did when questioned.
