Deuteronomy 9:16
Arabic Simplified (الكِتاب المُقَدَّس: التَّرْجَمَةُ العَرَبِيَّةُ المُبَسَّطَةُ)
What Does This Mean?
Moses is speaking and he saw that the people had made a golden calf and were worshiping it instead of following God's commands. This verse shows that the Israelites quickly turned away from the path God had set for them.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're on a trip and your parents give you a map to follow. But then you see a fun-looking playground and decide to play there instead. That's what the Israelites did. They got a shiny toy (the golden calf) and forgot about following God's instructions.
Historical Background
This verse is from the book of Deuteronomy, which is a speech given by Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. It was written around 1200-1000 BCE. The audience was the Israelites who were about to enter the land God promised them, but Moses is reminding them of their past failures.
Living It Out Today
Today, we can think about this when we get distracted by shiny things or easy pleasures that take us off the path God has for us. For example, a student might spend too much time on video games instead of studying, ignoring the path to their future goals.
