1 Samuel 16:9
Arabic Bible ERV 2009
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Jesse is bringing his sons in front of Samuel to see which one God has chosen to be the next king. Shammah passes by, but Samuel says God hasn't chosen him. This shows that God doesn't choose people based on their appearance or human standards.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a box of toys, and you're trying to find the perfect one to play with. Your mom or dad comes and looks at each toy, but keeps saying, 'Not that one, not that one.' That's what's happening here with Jesse's sons and Samuel. Samuel is looking for the one God wants, not the one that looks the best.
Historical Background
This passage is from the Book of 1 Samuel, traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel, with contributions from others. It was written around the 10th century BCE. The audience was the Israelites, and the cultural setting was one of transition from the era of judges to the era of kings.
Living It Out Today
In modern life, this verse reminds us not to judge people by their appearance or popularity. For example, a teacher might overlook a quiet student for a leadership role, but that student might have the qualities needed to excel.
