1 Samuel 5:5
Amharic New Standard Translation (አማርኛ አዲሱ መደበኛ ትርጉም) 2005
What Does This Mean?
This verse explains that the priests of Dagon and anyone who enters Dagon's temple in Ashdod do not step on the threshold because of an event that happened there. It highlights a cultural and religious practice that was established as a result of a divine encounter.
Explained for Children
Imagine if you were so scared of stepping on the welcome mat of a haunted house that you made sure never to do it again, and your friends followed too. That's kind of what happened here, but with a temple and a scary event.
Historical Background
1 Samuel was written by Samuel, Nathan, and Gad. This passage is from the time of King Saul, around 1050 BC. It describes the Philistines' reaction to a divine encounter after capturing the Ark of the Covenant.
Living It Out Today
Today, we can apply this by being mindful of the consequences of our actions and respecting boundaries set by others or by divine intervention. For example, if someone warns you not to touch a certain area because something bad happened there, it's wise to heed their warning.
