Mark 4:12
Afrikaans DB 2006 (Die Boodskap)
What Does This Mean?
This verse from Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus is explaining why he speaks in parables, saying that some people will see and hear but not truly understand his message. He wants to make sure that only those who are ready to listen will find the deeper meaning of what he teaches.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek with your friends. Some kids might look right at where you're hiding but not really see you because they're not looking carefully enough. Jesus is saying some people might hear his words, but if they don't pay attention or try to understand, it's like he's hidden from them.
Historical Background
Mark wrote this Gospel around the year 65 AD for a mixed audience of Christians and Gentiles in Rome. The cultural setting was one where Jesus' teachings were sometimes misunderstood or ignored, which led him to speak in parables so that only those who sought deeper meaning could understand his message.
Living It Out Today
Think about when you listen to the news or watch TV; some people might hear a story but not fully grasp its importance. This verse reminds us to actively seek understanding and engage deeply with what we read, see, and hear around us in our daily lives.
