Acts 22:8
Afrikaans DB 2006 (Die Boodskap)
What Does This Mean?
In this verse from the book of Acts, Paul is speaking and recalls his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. When he asks who was addressing him as 'Lord,' Jesus responds by identifying himself as Jesus of Nazareth, the very person Paul had been persecuting.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek, and you hear a voice saying 'I'm here.' You'd ask, 'Who are you?' Right? That's what happened to Paul. He heard a voice calling him and asked who it was. The answer surprised him: it was Jesus, the person he had been trying to stop.
Historical Background
The book of Acts was written by Luke, likely around 60-70 AD, aimed at a mixed audience of Christians, including those in Rome. This encounter with Paul takes place during his journey to Damascus where he is persecuting followers of Jesus, unaware that the voice he hears belongs to Jesus himself.
Living It Out Today
Today, this verse can remind us that sometimes we might be pursuing or fighting against things without realizing they could lead to a significant personal transformation. Like Paul, our lives can take unexpected turns when we encounter something or someone who challenges our beliefs and actions.
